From the UPSL to the World Cup Stage: Alex Freeman Heads USA Past Australia

There’s a moment every young player dreams about: the ball drops out of the sky, the net is waiting, and the whole world is watching. On Friday in Seattle, Alex Freeman lived it.

The 21-year-old defender rose highest off a corner, nodding home Sergiño Dest’s deflected effort to put the United States up 2-0 over Australia. A VAR check for offside briefly held the celebration hostage, but the goal stood and Lumen Field lifted off its foundation with a roar that the Seahawks would’ve been proud of. The result sent the co-hosts into the Round of 32, and it marked Freeman’s third international goal for the USMNT. The youngest starter in the American squad called it a “full-circle family moment,” a nod to his father, former Super Bowl champion and Green Bay Packers receiver Antonio Freeman.

For those of us who’ve followed his journey, “full-circle” feels exactly right.

Freeman was born in Baltimore but grew up in Fort Lauderdale, where his stepfather, Jake Hinkle, first put a ball at his feet. He came through American Heritage School and three seasons with Weston FC Academy before making the leap that defined his path: in 2020, encouraged by his Weston coach Javier Carrillo, he tried out for the Orlando City Academy who play in the UPSL. By 2021 he’d racked up eight goals and 15 assists across 30 appearances for Orlando’s under-17s.

That’s the kind of grassroots-to-glory arc this league exists to celebrate. And Freeman isn’t the only one writing it at this World Cup.

Look across the tournament to Ivory Coast, where 19-year-old Yan Diamande has announced himself as one of the breakout names of the summer. Before he was terrorizing defenders for RB Leipzig he was cutting his teeth in the UPSL Premier Division with AS Frenzi. From semi-pro pitches to a $100 million valuation and a starring role for the Elephants on football’s biggest stage.

Two players, two very different routes, one shared truth… the UPSL is where world-class talent gets its start. When Freeman climbed to head that ball past the Australian keeper, and when Diamande runs at backlines in front of millions, they carry a little piece of this league with them.

The dream isn’t abstract. It’s being lived right now, by players who once laced up in our divisions. Keep watching the UPSL. The next one is already out there.
